What is AccessAbility?

AccessAbility is a program directed at helping students with registered with the Disability Resource Centre become active at UBC Okanagan.  AccessAbility works to reduce barriers to exercise by providing a gym membership and one on one personal training from certified, experienced and capable trainers - at no cost to the student!

AccessAbility welcomes all fitness levels and types, so whether a student is an avid exerciser or they would like to know how to become more active.

If you are a student who is registered with the Disability Resource Centre you could be eligible to receive subsidized personal training under the AccessAbility program.
Meet The Trainers

Gabriel Tobias - Program Administrator

Gabriel graduated from UBC Okanagan with a Human Kinetics degree in 2011.  He returned in 2013 to fulfill the necessary prerequisites for medical school.  During that time, Gabriel played rugby for the university, unfortunately sustaining a knee injury that required several surgeries.  The injury led him to the decision to make a training program that focused on helping students with barriers to exercise (AccessAbility!).  Gabriel has since started medical school and continues to act as a lead on the program.

Sam Carroll - BHK, CSEP-CEP, EIMC Level 2

From Merritt, British Columbia, Sam graduated from the University of British Columbia's Human Kinetics program in 2015.  Playing a lot of hockey, lacrosse and rugby while growing up then focusing heavily on rugby during more recent years, where he spent 4 years playing as a student athlete while attending UBCO.  His love of the weight room always drove the success he saw on the field and through a combination of his knowledge of sports and human kinetics background has had the opportunity to provide exercise prescriptions for Provincial and National level athletes.

Steve Budd - BKin, CSEP-CEP

Steve graduated from the UBCO Human Kinetics program in 2015.  He is currently back at UBCO working on prerequisites for entrance into physiotherapy. He has been involved with coaching and training many volleyball teams over the years, and is currently in his 4th season of coaching with the UBCO Heat men’s volleyball team.
